An Arts & Crafts Experience
Nanny Brow Luxury Country House, Ambleside
Combine your visit to Blackwell with luxury accomodation at Nanny Brow, for an extended Arts and Crafts experience. Nanny Brow is an Arts an Crafts gem built in 1904 by the distinguished architect Francis Whitwell. Whitwell, who practiced with Guy Dawber in London, was a fellow of RIBA and later came to Ambleside to build his family home. Built using traditional Lakeland stone on the solid rock of Nanny Brow, this imposing country house boasts of many subtle features so characteristic of the Arts and Crafts movement including gentle motifs of animals and flowers in the plasterwork, oak paneling and leaded oak picture windows facing the valley and the hills.
In 2009 Sue and Peter Robinson became custodians of this beautiful house which had been left empty for many years and set about her restoration. The house is featured in the book “The Arts and Crafts Houses of The Lake District” by Esme Whittaker and Matthew Hyde and named as one of the significant properties in The Lake District for the successful bid for UNESCO World Heritage Status in 2017.
