Playing with Place

Sat 27 May – Sat 3 June 2017
Every day, 10.30am - 1.30pm

Free drop-in family workshops that explore texture, perspective and scale inspired by Julian Cooper’s paintings.

Appealing to multiple senses, participants will initially explore interesting and engaging surfaces, using mystery boxes, with closed eyes or with mirrors. Taking inspiration from their discoveries of the natural and processed surfaces, participants will begin their artwork by using a grey-scale colour mixing technique with tertiary shades to create a range of soft cool and warm tones on large mixing pallets. Unconventional and regular painting tools will be used to lay marks onto paper canvases, and fun perspective play will be introduced by taping the canvases to the floor, walls, or underside of tables.

Creative and artistic language will play an important role in this playful session, and participants will follow in Cooper’s example and ‘experiment with materials to create something that is not material.'
