In 2001 Abbot Hall was selected as one of five galleries in Britain to join a three-year pilot scheme in collaboration with Tate. The successful partnership was extended for a further two years and between them the five partner galleries received a further £440,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund.

This important partnership greatly enhanced the activities of the Lakeland Arts Trust and has been of great benefit to both visitors and staff, giving increased access to the nation's collections of British and Modern Art. The curator at Abbot Hall continues to work with Tate on securing loans for its exhibition programme as well as loaning its own works to Tate.
