JMW Turner - The Passage of Mount St Gothard from the centre of Teufels Broch (Devil’s Bridge), 1804
At over one metre tall, Turner’s monumental watercolour of this notorious Alpine pass epitomises the very notion of the Sublime at a time when watercolour as a medium was competing directly with oil painting for prestige and importance. The Turner and his Contemporaries exhibition presents a unique opportunity to view the work not just in isolation but in the context of Turner’s career as a whole.
Tuesday 8 & 22 May 2012
Barbara Hepworth - Oval Form: Trezion, 1962-3
Since its acquisition in 1966, Barbara Hepworth’s sculpture, Oval Form: Trezion, has graced the lawn outside the entrance to Abbot Hall – a location sanctioned by Hepworth herself. This talk will be a fantastic opportunity to learn more about a highly significant work by an artist who, along with her contemporary Henry Moore, was one of the greatest sculptors this country has ever produced.
