Throughout 2001
As part of the Tate Partnership, a large bronze sculpture of a woman by Sir Jacob Epstein (1880-1959) was displayed in the Abbot Hall entrance. Epstein was born in New York but after spending time in Paris, he settled in London in 1905. He is best known for the 18 statues he was commissioned to make for the British Medical Association building, which caused uproar and scandal after they were erected in 1908.
The Visitation was completed in 1926 and, like many of his later works, it has an over-lifesize quality reminiscent of Rodin's sculptures.
