Not So Grim Up North
Display: 17 January - 12 April 2014
Lakeland Arts recently received two fabulous late LS Lowry paintings on long term loan. This is an opportunity to see these wonderful new additions to the collection alongside other works by important northern artists which have rarely been shown. For all the apparent ‘grimness’ of William Bell’s Lowry-esque painting of boys playing football, Jack Simcock’s lonely landscapes, Percy Kelly’s moody charcoal of a Cumberland Landscape, or LS Lowry’s archetypal Mill Scene, there is a melancholic beauty to these depictions of the industrial north.
